HERVEY BAY: “VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE” is a volunteer organisation. This rescue organisation was founded due to 2 fishermen from Burrum Heads going missing and locals finding an empty boat and no men. The relatives decided to donate over $1,000 to implement a rescue organisation called “Burrum Rescue”. As funding became more available the operation grew in size and changed its name to “Air Sea Rescue”. After a number of years the state association changed the name to “Volunteer Marine Rescue”.
V.M.R. relies on membership subscription, sponsorships and donations to cover equipment, running costs and maintenance to keep the rescue vessels on the water, ready to respond 24 hours a day all year round.
